2014 Walk for Arthritis
walk to cure arthritis

All around the country this month, the Arthritis Foundation Walks for Arthritis are taking place. On June 8th, In Washington, DC, I plan to walk with many of my patients to support research to find a cure for arthritis. I am looking forward to the Walk this year to see all those individuals in my community who believe that supporting arthritis research is an important activity.

As I said in a previous blog, moving is the best medicine. So, participants of the Walk for Arthritis will not only be supporters of or, patients with arthritis but, will also be doing exercise that is an important part of any therapy. Walking is a useful way of keeping muscles strong and also using up calories. Some patients have difficulty walking because of pain in their feet, knees or hips. Those individuals at the Walk go only as far as they feel comfortable – however, any distance is worthwhile.

The Walk for Arthritis is a great event but it is only 1 day of the year. We need to be supporting this effort every day of the year. Become an advocate. Become an active member of your local Arthritis Foundation chapter. There is strength in numbers. The more people that believe this to be an important health issue, the more it will become one. Maybe then we will have a cure for this disabling problem.
